I love Kathryn Bigelow's movies, mostly Near Dark, Point Break & Strange Days. Those movies totally made Generation X the last decade. It's amazing you didn't mention her or her previous movies.

That said I can't bring myself to watch this. It'll be Apocalypse Now/Deer Hunter all over again. The focus will be less on the Iraqi civilians than the soldiers themselves. There aren't any POVs from the civs on how they live their lives in Iraq or how they deal with the US soldiers. If there are, most Iraqis would be insurgents, terrorists, dictators etc. but never kids, women, families or anyone with jobs. There's never any room or time for at least one or two Iraqi civs to develop as characters, they're just plot devices for the oh-so wangsty marines to get their shit together and do something. It's the same for most Vietnam movies before these Iraqi movies.

It's also the same for most "patriotic" movies from my country, Malaysia. The "invaders" that are the Brits, or Portuguese or the Japanese that occupy Malaysia are always the mustache-twirling assholes, while our rebels are heroic and just. Again, both sides are never really characters, just plot devices.

Aren't there any good movies out there since Battle of Algiers that show the both sides of any horrifying conflict?
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

The Hurt Locker is one of my favorites of the year and I'll be making mention of it in my impending Oscar picks video, it's just not one of my favorites of the decade. The reason I mentioned Transformers is because it is the first movie I'd seen to use the digital cameo pattern. Since it takes place in 2007, it does so correctly.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
