Yesterday news broke from Warner Bros. that Anne Hathaway has been confirmed for the role of Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Tom Hard for the role of Bane in the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. Last time around I scoffed at Heath Ledger playing the Joker, and as we can all confirm his performance was no fluke. With that in mind I decided to give a day to settle in, but despite having never been led astray by Christopher Nolan I steadfastly remain concerned about the third installment in his Batman franchise.
More importantly, Batman fans are not going to embrace the, by contrast, homely Anne Hathaway in the role of the sexiest villain(?) in Gotham City. Face it, if she wasn’t famous she wouldn’t be stopping traffic. I speculate that her inclusion stems from being a current darling of Hollywood. The same can be said for the out of place Ellen Page in Inception, a movie that didn’t require a Scooby-Doo cohort and did so to grab the valued teenage girl demographic.
Is Tom Hardy right for Bane? Last week, no one could look at Tom Hardy and think, “Yep, he needs to play Bane.”
I would have gone even further from the initial concept and headed for Topher Grace. Just look at the magic he brought to Venom in Spider-Man 3. I fully believed he was a former football star. Worse, what are the chances Bane has an original and intriguing scheme? My guess is that a hulking roid-rager isn’t going to have an intellectually stimulating story because the ultimate showdown has to culminate in a defeat through Batman tricking him. Even if Bane is supposed to be a genius, his “power” forces him into primal thinking. It’s probably going to be as run of the mill as saying he blames Batman for an accident and now he has to kill him. Tell me if that doesn’t sound familiar.
I would have chosen to have Batman square off with Clock King, a villain we haven’t seen already, and one that doesn’t need an outlandish costume.
I bet Nolan thinks he can do no wrong— if true, many would agree. He believes he can make anyone actor into a great character and likewise make a fantastic movie even after putting into place elements to work against it. We’ll have to wait and see.
