I believe in using the four star system. A star will appear on this site like this: *. It’s the best websafe means of conveying the message. I use halves as well: ½. The lowest possible score a movie can receive from me is one star. Just having a title gives the movie a *. If the movie in question is among the best of all time, it receives ****. Every film will have its genre taken into consideration before I appoint a star value to it. So, for example, a comedy which I found humorous would be rated highly. I do not reward films for being “so bad it’s good”. A poor attempt is not worth your time and money while a film rated at *** or more is certainly worth the price of admission.
A common misconception is that a ** film is only half the quality of a ****. For me, an additional star is a plateau reached through an increase based on a percent of quality. A ** film appears to be literally double the quality of *, and that is true; but for my system a 100% quality gain is required for each step up. This applies across the spectrum. Thus a *** is twice the experience of a **. I even dare say that a **** is twice the improvement in quality over a ***.
